My New KitchenAid Friend: The SideSwipe

I love my Kitchen-Aid Mixer. It’s big and red and powerful (get your mind out of the gutter) and it makes all my baking dreams come true . . . Okay, that last one might be taking it a step too far, but seriously, I love my Kitchen-Aid. Everything from whipped cream to mashed potatoes come out of it in my kitchen. So when I was given the opportunity to try out a special blade, the SideSwipe, which is designed to scrape the bowl while mixing so you don’t have to, I was intrigued and frankly thrilled.

halloween-008.jpgI was expecting a rubber piece to fit onto my existing blade, but instead got a whole new blade. How awesome! I had been worried that it would be a pain to attach to the blade, but fortunately my worries were completely unfounded.  A few things I noticed off the bat:

  • It’s dishwasher safe (top rack).
  • Made from a different material from the usually KA accessories
  • Fits right on the mixer as promised

I tested the blade making one of my favorite things: brownies. Usually, I end up stopping the mixer a few times before the process is over to scrape down the sides. I never realized how much time this added to my mixing though. With the SideSwipe, the whole mixing process - from start to finish - took about two minutes. Check out how clean the bowl was during the mixing process:

The only downside was that the bits of batter that got stuck to the blade were hard to get off (I usually scrape them off to maximize whatever I am making). Ultimately, I realized that this wasn’t THAT big a deal (and my husband surely enjoyed licking the blade since I didn’t obsessively scrape it this time), so I guess that is something I can live with. But that leads also to my other concern — how well and easy it would be to clean? Would the dishwasher be able to do it without prerinsing (which I HATE to do)? As it turns out, I again had nothing to worry about. This cleaned up like a charm.

So, would I buy this blade for myself if I didn’t have the sample? I checked out the price — $24.95. With shipping, it would be just over $30. Not bad at all. And with the holidays coming up (read: cooking frenzy), I will definitely get a lot of use out of it. So, yes, I think I would.

That thing is bad to the bone!!! I need one.

What can I say…WOW what a great product. The Side Swipe does exactly what it says it will do. You don’t have to scrape the sides of the bowl! I have made cut out cookie dough and a cake so far. Neither of which I had scrape the sides.

Another thing I noticed is when adding the flour to the sugar cookie dough it did not give me a flour bath like the original Kitchen-Aid blade did. The Side Swipe blade did a great job of mixing.

If you are doing a lot of baking the blade is so easy to wash without putting it in the top rack of the diswasher. I just run mine under some hot water and whatever you are mixing comes right off.

One piece of advice read the instructions on the back. I did not and the first time I used the Side Swipe blade my Kitchen-Aid mixer bounced so much that I thought what kind of product did I buy. So please read the instructions as they tell you if your mixer bounces like mine did there is a screw that you can adjust to stop the bouncing. I adjusted the screw and no more bouncing.

I am so pleased with the Side Swipe that I am buying one for each of my
Daughter-in-Laws. $24.95 was a great investment.

Where can I buy this product for a 5 quart stand up KitchenAid mixer? I do not have the tilt-head model.

The website for this company is http://www.sideswipeblade.com and on the website they list all the models of mixers and when the side swipe will be available for them.
So far only the 4.5 qt and 5 qt tilt models have blades made and available…the rest of the models are coming in the future. (You can see the list here: http://www.sideswipeblade.com/solution.html)

I hope this helps. I’m waiting for mine to arrive! :-)
