Refrigerator Check-Up

refrigerator.jpgAs long as it’s cold and the light comes on when you open the door, if you’re like most people, you probably don’t give your refrigerator a second thought.  You might want to reconsider.  A research team from Tennessee State University and Kansas State University recently surveyed 200 home refrigerators, measuring the temperature in different sections of the appliance.  Unfortunately, the findings weren’t too good.  A staggering 80% of the refrigerators surveyed were found to be too warm (above 40 degrees) to be considered safe.  So what to do?

Put a thermometer on the middle shelf of your fridge and check it a few times a day over several days.  If you notice that the temp raises above 40 degrees frequently, then lower the thermostat.

More tips to keep your food and family safe:

- Meat, eggs and milk should go on the coldest shelf

- The door should be used to hold items that don’t spoil easily (i.e., condiments, salad dressing, etc.)

- Don’t put eggs in the egg holder.  They should instead go on the coldest shelf.
