Everyone has a personal preference and needs, so do a little bit of research before you purchase one. Most appliance departments have a varied selection, and there's usually an instruction booklet available or in the box with the model you are considering.I use a 6 quart oval Rival crock pot with 3 heat settings: high, low and warm.

The high and low settings can be programmed for 4, 6, or 8 hours cooking time, and when the cooking time is up, the pot automatically shifts to the warm setting and will stay on that setting until the pot is turned off. This feature is
handy if you have a family where people get home and eat at different times. There were many nights I planned to eat at 6 pm, only to find that a swim meet ran late, and the kids didn't get home until 7, for example. Because dinner did not spend that hour drying out in the oven, it was warm and delicious.

If you were to recommend a first crock pot to a family of four, what would it be? What features are required?
