My Perfect Thermometer

I can’t tell you how many thermometers I’ve gone through trying to find one that will be reliable for all of my needs. I’ve just about given up on the remote thermometers that supposedly let you walk away and wait for the alarm to tell you that your food has reached your desired temperature. They barely work and even then, not so reliably.

I turned to the trusty “instant read” thermometers, but they’re not that instant, and I seem to be re-calibrating them all the time. Enter the Thermapen.

From the ThermoWorks web site:

Thermapen

Cook’s Illustrated says about the Thermapen: “Our favorite instant-read thermometer insures perfectly cooked turkey every time.” In a review of instant read thermometers Cooks Illustrated rated the Thermapen as the “Best Thermometer.” The first time they reviewed an earlier version of the Thermapen. Since then we’ve added auto-shutoff and the Super-Fast, reduced-tip probe.

I know what’s going to be on my wish list this year.

I got one of these last Christmas from my wife… It’s the best thermometer I’ve used. I use some remote thermometers to measure chamber and meat temps, but I always check with the Thermapen. There’s nothing better for not losing chamber temp than being able to open up, check a temp in a few seconds, and get back out!

This looks great, but WOW is it expensive. Curt, do you think it is worth it?

I want one of those too. The ONLY negative comments I have read mention that they don’t like moisture, (even leaving them outside overnight is a no-no) which is not enough to scare me off.
