Spice Grinders

If you play with spices a lot like I do you probably understand the importance of a good spice grinder. I use a food processor to make big ol’ batches of my barbecue rubs but it’s really hard to control the size of the finished grind. I have a mortar and pestle, but it’s so….well, it’s so manual. Sure, it works great for smashing a few peppercorns, dried peppers or sea salt. It’s handy for making enough rub for something like a steak or some chops, but I need something in between the two. Here is the one I have picked out.

It is made by Krups and is priced at $30. It’s the model GX4100 Coffee, Herb & Spice Mill. You can check out the specifics at the Krups Online Store. This model got a good recommendation from Cook’s Illustrated magazine, so I’m going to give one a try.

I’ve switched to the first As-Seen-On-TV item I’ve ever actually liked… The Magic Bullet. What I like about it over a coffee grinder is that it’s an enclosed unit, so the spices don’t make a mess as much as they do with the coffee grinders, and I think it more thoroughly grinds, too.

I saw a cool tip in Cook’s Illustrated about cleaning a spice (or coffee) grinder. Put some rice in there and pulverize it some, then pour it out. It picks up some of the oils, as well.

I’ll have to check out the Magic Bullet– sounds like a good thing to review there, Curt…hint, hint…
