Tongs

tongs.jpgBoy do I love the equipment section in my favorite cooking store.  The latest addition to my kitchen tool drawer were two pairs of these tongs. They have all of the popular features: 18/8 stainless steel construction, a locking hinge and silicone tips that can withstand temperatures of up to 600°F.  I selected two colors to help me eliminate any chance of cross contamination if I happened to be using them at the same time.

They should have been yellow in color to indicate that they are lemons, because they truly are.  The first thing I noticed was the locking mechanism had been designed to work exactly opposite of all my other locking tongs. To unlock them, one must pull out on the tab. This difference is not really a show stopper, in fact it is minor detail, but it gets worse. The gripping ability of the silicone tips is horrible.  They are too slick to get a good bite on just about anything that is not dry and lightweight.  Applying more pressure causes the handle to flex behind the gripping area.  Once again, it goes to show that you can’t judge something on looks. Don’t waste your money on these.
